Year 9

Year 9 is a time of change and looking to the future. The pupils are supported daily by a dedicated tutor team of 9 tutors: Mrs Jackson, Mr P Evans, Mrs Hughes, Mr C Davies, Mrs N Rees, Miss M John, Mrs Norman, Mr Newton, Mrs S Morgan and Miss Rose.
Pupils are becoming more involved in their learning as they regularly meet with their tutors for individual mentoring. They follow learning tasks during tutor time and during L4L days, that get them to think and help them to make decisions about their futures. All pupils are actively encouraged to look at how they can achieve their KS3 targets, as they know how this will benefit them for their GCESs.
Pupils feel valued and listened to by their tutors and they are also represented by their elected pupil voice members who meet with their PPM every half term to discuss their attitude to learning and how they can be supported further.
During this year pupils have to make big decisions about their option choices for GCSEs. Pupils have the chance to choose new and exciting courses both in and out of school. The options out of school include Diplomas and apprenticeships in subjects such as Engineering and Hair and Beauty.
As well as academic progress, we have a wealth of talent amongst the year 9 pupils which we continually celebrate. So far this year we’ve wished Tennesse Randall, 9SAM, all the best as she has just successfully defended her world kickboxing title, she now holds five! A massive congratulations to Tennessee!
Danielle Difede, Ashleigh Roberts and Naomi Randall have been selected for the Llanelli Schools under 14’s netball team. Hannah Voss, Phoebe Jewell and Kirsten Thomas have been selected for, and represented Llanelli, in the Llanelli Schools under 14’s hockey squad.
Chloe Jenkins, 9EJJ, recently came in second in a gymnastic competition in Paris. Nathan Humphries, 9EJJ, represents Wales for snooker and Bethany Mullen, 9EJJ, is an exceptionally accomplished dancer, participating in national dance competitions. Cori Thomas, 9NR, captains a local Cheerleading team at national competitions.
As well as a wide range of sporting achievements, we are very proud of our school choir which the year 9 pupils have a strong role, Ashley Phillips, 9EJJ, being one our stars. Owen Hillier and Tom Robinson, 9EJJ, are becoming accomplished guitarists.
Three pupils from 9Elm (Yasmin Gibbard, Marcus Shingler Jones and Connor Gray) who entered a photographic competition in Year 8 looking at the sense of place in the school grounds, as part of their geography lessons, were selected to attand the national awards presentation. They did extremely well to have their three photographs chosen. Colliers Green Focus, who sponsor the competition, paid for the three pupils to travel to London First Class in order for them to attend the prestigious awards evening in the Royal Institute for British Architects. It was an amazing experience to attend the evening as well as a chance to see some of the London sights, including Trafalgar Square, the Christmas lights on Regents Street and Hamleys toy shop.
As a result of taking part in the competition last year and through nomination, the school has been selected as one of 10 in the UK to work with a professional photographer and geographer for a day with 30 pupils. These pupils will have the chance to enter next years 'compact' competition. These children will work for a whole day with their geography teachers and the visiting professionals taking photos of a changing town.
