Year 10

Year 10 has gotten off to a flying start, all pupils are very aware of the impact the work they are doing now will have on their final GCSE results, having already completed some aspects of course work and undertaken controlled assessments. Year 10 has continued with Mr N Murphy as Pupil Progress Manager and Mrs J James as Pastoral Support, who you would have seen at the Key Stage 4 course work evening in September.

Year 10 Parents evening will be 26th April 2012, please contact us sooner if you have any concerns.

In addition to the regular timetable pupils have the opportunity to participate in many other activities, read on to find out more;
Fund raising

Year 10 pupils have supported two charities already this year. Over £200 was raised for the Tenovus Cancer Charity by pupils kindly purchasing wristbands to support the Wales Rugby team at the World Cup in New Zealand. Many thanks to all.
Tutor groups prepared shoe boxes to support `Operation Christmas Child`. Pupils are working in small groups to fill their boxes with gifts for under privileged children. In addition, pupils will satisfy Welsh Baccalaureate standards through working cooperatively.

Work Experience

Just a reminder to all pupils that Work Experience forms need to be completed and returned to Miss Spiers as soon as possible. It is important that you spend your week doing something that you really want to do. Be pro-active and get it done!

An Introduction into Engineering

30 year 10 Pupils had a fantastic opportunity to experience an introduction into engineering. We were all very surprised to be met by the army when we arrived at Templeton airfield. Our day was made up of a variety of activities some of which were very physical but all of which involved 'thinking out of the box'. It was great to see who developed naturally as team leaders, the teamwork and encouragement was incredible. None of the problems had obvious solutions but due to the pupils sheer determination and resolve they dug deep to support each other to solve the problems.

What's this got to do with engineering? Was a common question at the end of the day, although pupils had had a great day the link to engineering was not apparent immediately, but when the engineering definition was discussed and how well all the activities fitted into to this they were surprised at how much fun engineering could be.

Prefectship

It won`t be too long now before pupils can apply, by letter, to become prefects in Year 11.We normally choose around forty and the position of responsibility will help you in future interviews and job applications. Start thinking about your strengths as a person and what you can offer as a prefect. Applications are open to all pupils in the year group. Ask your form tutor to help you if you are unsure.

School Council

Our Year group representatives are Johurul Haque and Ellie Dainton. We look forward to hearing the latest news in future assemblies.
Joe Chiffi and the Olympics!

Joe has been up to Glasgow over the half term attempting to be selected to represent Wales in a TV programme to be shown on the BBC in the build up to the London Olympics, next Summer. After rigorous tasks all week and elimination exercises at regular intervals, Joe was selected (from 1000 pupils) to represent his country, in a team of four, to compete against England, Scotland and Ireland.

Joe was mentored by Olympic athlete, Christian Malcolm and also met Phillips Idowu, the triple jumper, Lewis Smith, the Olympic Gymnast and Barry McGuigan, the ex-world champion boxer. At present, Joe is back in Glasgow filming for the forthcoming series. We wish him every success.

Sport

Llanelli Schoolboys Under 15 Rugby

We are very proud to have so many boys representing their town in Rugby with regular fixtures against all the strongest schools districts in the country.

The pupils who made the squad are; Joe Chiffi, Jamie Hughes, James Williams, Jac Morgan, Callum Harries, Daniel Gealy and Elliot Burchell.

Well done to all of you.

Llanelli Schools Under 16 Hockey

It is really encouraging to see so many girls being selected to represent Llanelli against all the other local districts.

The pupils selected are; Lucy James, Molly Jones, Rhosanna Ellum, Tiffany Davies, Annabel Morgan, Felicity Gardner, Jessica Jones and Ellie Dainton.

Da Iawn!

Phoenix Project

The pupils who attended the ”Phoenix Course” at Llanelli Fire Station were excellent and I had really good feedback from the facilitators. They all behaved listened and contributed to all the tasks which consisted of ladder drills, running hoses climbed the tower and got to enact putting out a house fire. They also worked on teambuilding tasks which were a great success. Apparently very few groups get to go to Earlswood to see the Dog Search & Rescue teams, but as a reward for their behaviour our group were asked if they would like to go. They really enjoyed themselves experiencing rescuing a casualty in a smoke filled house and they then had to hide from the rescue dogs which was amazing to see. All in all a really good week for pupils and a good advertisement for Coedcae school.

The pupils invoved were; Coree Baitup, Kamil Puternicki, Jordan James, Shane Williams, Kiera Woods, Chloe Lewis, Jinan Myhill, Danny Jones and Daniel Anderson.

Business Enterprise

Towards the end of the Summer Term, Careers Wales came in to school to run an inter form business competition to develop a product for the forthcoming Olympics.

Forms selected pupils to represent them, and following a days’ hard work, 9D were selected to represent the school in the Carmarthenshire final.

The team comprised of: Ellie Dainton, Felicity Gardner, Kirsty King, Josh Rosenthal, Stacey Thomas, Joseph Turner, Jordan Harries and Cory Peel. Their idea was to produce a carton that not only held a drink, but had a compartment that could hold fresh fruit or cookies or nuts or anything else nutritious that could fit! They named their product BOLT (to let buyers know that this was a fast food and, who is the fastest man on the planet?).

After much hard work including writing business plans, creating logos and making a large container, the team took their ideas to the Carmarthenshire final which was held at Parc y Scarlets.

Unfortunately, our pupils were not selected to represent Carmarthenshire schools, but the judges did inform them that their sales pitch was the best that they had ever heard.

Look out Sir Alan Sugar, there is competition for you and it’s coming from Coedcae!
