Why do we study Welsh?
There are a number of reasons why you have to study Welsh:
• It’s part of our culture and way of life.
• It’s an important part of living in Wales and being Welsh.
• For vast numbers of people Welsh is their language of choice. Companies and businesses recognise this and want to employ people who can communicate in Welsh.
Jobs where Welsh is considered essential
• Teacher in Welsh medium school
• Welsh teacher in English medium school
• Translator
• Welsh medium broadcasting e.g. S4C, Radio Cymru
Jobs where Welsh is advantageous
• Public sector Work e.g. Health care, nursing, police force, local government, Welsh assembly government, government agencies, National businesses,
• Receptionist,
• Call centre work,
• Customer sales e.g. shops.
Aims & Objectives of the Welsh Department
The staff of the Welsh Department aim to nurture pupils’ enthusiasm for Welsh whilst developing their knowledge and mastery of the language through listening, reading, writing and speaking tasks.
Our aim is to provide a positive learning experience by creating a stimulating and organised learning environment.
Aims at Key Stage 3
All pupils should:
• be able to write some sentences voluntarily;
• be able to speak with some confidence;
• understand a variety of Welsh texts;
• learn about the culture of Wales and what it means to be Welsh.
Aims at Key Stage 4
All pupils should:
• acquire knowledge about their area and Carmarthenshire;
• be able to contribute to bilingual life in Wales;
• be confident to use Welsh in work and leisure contexts.

Extra Curricular Activities.
• Clwb Gwaith Cartref – A weekly homework club is held every Wednesday after school: enabling pupils to catch up with missed work / receive extra guidance with homework tasks / sit in a quiet calm area to complete tasks.
• Clwb yr Urdd – A Welsh club meets once a week providing pupils with the opportunity to practise their Welsh in a fun, relaxed environment. (Please click here)
• Radio Club / Magazine Club – Two weekly clubs are held for MAT pupils (More Able and Talented pupils); providing opportunities for pupils to practise and use their Welsh in everyday situations.
• The Urdd Eisteddfod – Pupils are given the opportunity to compete in all competitions - sporting, reciting, musical, dancing, art and technology.
• In keeping with the Christmas festivities, pupils in KS3 are able to visit Theatre Elli to see a Welsh pantomime.
• An annual weekend visit to the Urdd camp at Llangrannog is organised for pupils in year 7, where they are able to experience new and exciting activities such as quad biking / go-karting, skiing, trampolining, archery etc.
• Saint David’s Day celebrations are an integral part of the ‘Learning for Life’ programme; enabling pupils to learn about Wales, its’ culture and what it is to be Welsh.
