Why do we study Welsh?
There are a number of reasons why you have to study Welsh:
· It’s part of our culture and way of life.
· It’s an important part of living in Wales and being Welsh.
· For vast numbers of people Welsh is their language of choice. Companies and businesses recognise this and want to employ people who can communicate in Welsh.
Jobs where Welsh is advantageous
The list is endless!!! E.g.
· Public sector Work e.g. Health care, nursing, police force, local government, Welsh assembly government, government agencies, National businesses,
· Receptionist,
· Call centre work,
· Customer sales e.g. shops,

Aims & Objectives of the Welsh Department
The staff of the Welsh Department aim to nurture pupils’ enthusiasm for Welsh whilst developing their knowledge and mastery of the language through listening, reading, writing and speaking tasks.
Our aim is to provide a positive learning experience by creating a stimulating and organised learning environment.
A. Aims at Key Stage 3
All pupils should:
· be able to write some sentences voluntarily;
· be able to speak with some confidence;
· understand a variety of Welsh texts;
· learn about the culture of Wales and what it means to be Welsh.
B. Aims at Key Stage 4
All pupils should:
· acquire knowledge about their area and Carmarthenshire;
· be able to contribute to bilingual life in Wales;
· be confident to use Welsh in work and leisure contexts.

The Key Stage 4 Scheme of Work
Pupils will either study the ‘Byw’r Gymraeg’ (Living Welsh) course or the ‘Cymraeg Ymarferol’ (Practical Welsh) course, depending on ability and suitability.
Byw’r Gymraeg – Living Welsh
This course is aimed at giving pupils the language skills to talk in Welsh, on a variety of every day topics.

COURSEWORK / INTERNAL ASSESSMENT
Coursework is worth 20% of the GCSE grade. It consists of:
(2 – 3 minutes – Lower Tier)
(3 – 4 minutes – Higher Tier)

· A ‘role play’ · An ‘individual presentation’
EXAMINATIONS / EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT
These take place at the end of year 11 and consist of:
Speaking 20% (A 6 – 10 minute conversation in groups)
Listening 10%
Reading/ 50% (2 reading questions and 2 written questions)

Cymraeg Ymarferol – Practical Welsh
This course is aimed at giving pupils the ability to use the language in a variety of practical situations, and also to develop a positive outlook on Wales and Welsh culture.

Coursework is worth 40% of the GCSE grade. It consists of:
Speaking 20% (2 tasks - A ‘role play’ and a ‘survey’)
Reading 10% (1 written responses to 2 different reading materials)
Writing 10% (2 written tasks based on Carmarthenshire)

These take place towards the end of year 11 and are worth 50% of the final mark:

Extra Curricular Activities.
· Clwb Menter – A Welsh club meets once a week with opportunities for surfing, canoeing, football, dancing, cooking etc.
- The Urdd Eisteddfod – Pupils are given the opportunity to compete in all competitions - sporting, reciting, musical, dancing, art and technology.

In keeping with the Christmas festivities, pupils in KS3 are able to visit Theatre Elli to see a Welsh pantomime.
- An annual weekend visit to the Urdd camp at Llangrannog is organised for pupils in year 7, where they are able to experience new and exciting activities such as quad biking / go-karting, skiing, trampolining, archery etc.
- The Department celebrates Saint David’s Day, by holding an annual Saint David’s Day assembly with guest speaker. This is followed by a school ‘Eisteddfod’ for pupils in years 7, 8 and 9.
