Modern Foreign Languages
The MFL Department is situated in the main corridor of the school. There are 4 members of staff who all teach KS3 and KS4.
Pupils are given the opportunity to learn both French and Spanish from year 7. Pupils have two lessons of French per week and one lesson of Spanish. In year 10 pupils can choose to study both French and Spanish at GCSE level.
The Metro course is used for French. In Spanish, we use Listos and Mira.
During lessons, pupils do a lot of work on the interactive white board including games and lots of fun activities. They usually listen to recordings or clips of native French and Spanish speakers and there is an emphasis on speaking as this is the best way to learn a new language.
The department does an annual visit to France or Spain which is open to all pupils. The visit takes place during activities week in the summer term. This year we are going to Tossa de Mar and we will also be visiting Barcelona and speaking lots of Spanish.
We have a link with a school in Brittany and our pupils have been on exchange visits with their French pen friends. During the visit our pupils attended school and learned a lot about life in France.
As part of the department’s policy to improve literacy, our year 7 pupils are taking part in the national Spelling Bee competition. This involves recognising and spelling out words in French. There are class winners and 4 pupils will go on to represent the school in an inter schools competition.
There is a spelling club and a French club which are held during the lunch hour once a week.
The department was involved in organising a Multicultural Day earlier this year. We worked closely with the Llanelli Multicultural Society and pictures of the event can be found on their website/ facebook page.
