The ICT department

The aims of the ICT department

At Coedcae School, we aim to provide a learning environment that will allow our pupils to become independent users of ICT.

Pupils will learn the necessary ICT skills to support their learning in other subjects, to prepare them for college and the world of work.  The ICT department fully values the significance of developing competitive citizens who are skilled for the 21st century.

Curriculum

·        Pupils in Year 7 and 8 are taught discrete lessons of ICT.  In Year 8 pupils are given the opportunity to gain a Key Skills qualification accredited by the WJEC at Level 1 or 2.  Pupils study exciting topics designed to promote pupil interest.  They learn to use a whole range of industry standard software packages Microsoft to Serif.

·        In Year 9 pupils’ ICT skills are further developed on a cross curricular basis.  Through specified topics in other subjects such as Welsh and Geography pupils transfer their skills to other situations, supporting the further development of ICT capability.

·        In Key Stage 4 pupils are given the opportunity to study GCSE ICT accredited by the WJEC.  The GCSE course allows them to further develop their skills in the software learnt at Key Stage 3.

·        Pupils are also given the opportunity to study Business Communication Systems (BCS) accredited by OCR.  Pupils enhance their ICT skills and develop an understanding of business.

Staff

The ICT department consists of Mrs. N. Rees (The Head of ICT) and Miss. J. Hadfield.  Mrs. K O'Neil of the English department also teaches ICT to Year 7 pupils.

Accommodation and resources

Our network of computers across the school allows pupils to have access to a computer each during ICT lessons.  We have 4 designated suites for ICT lessons.   All are fully equipped with state of the art hardware and software to fully enhance the learning experience of our pupils.  Coedcae School has recently gone wireless, laptop trollies are available throughout the School for pupils to transfer the skills they have learnt in ICT to other subjects.

Extra curricular

If pupils fail to complete tasks, or are absent they are actively encouraged to use ICT outside lesson times. Pupils are also given the opportunity to attend ICT clubs where they can learn exciting new skills in a more relaxed environment.

Our Virtual Learning Environment and communication

The ICT department value the importance of good communication with pupils and pupils’ ability to access the “classroom” when it suits them.  All pupils are given access to email, they are able to access their email from any computer with an Internet connection.  Pupils are encouraged to communicate with their teachers via email with any query about their work.  Pupils are also given access to our Virtual Learning Environment, each pupil is given a username and password, they can log on and access School resources and work created by their teacher.  The ICT department put many resources on this platform for pupils to access from anywhere with an Internet connection.
