English Department

English at Coedcae is about developing children’s literacy skills, and much more besides. The department believes in a mixture of traditional and innovative teaching methods, and our primary concern is to get the very best out of the children – a fact reflected in impressive results at both key stages.

In year 7 children are placed in mixed-ability groups for a skills-based curriculum, focusing on literacy. English, along with the humanities, is taught through a number of well-planned, themed units that develop basic skills. In year 8, children are taught in form groups and work focuses on improving written and reading skills, and on exploring a wide range of literary texts. Currently, pupils are placed in broad ability groups in year 9 and follow a curriculum designed to prepare them for the rigors of GCSE. Those students who have performed consistently well in years 7 and 8 are given the opportunity to sit Film Studies GCSE in year 9, taught as an extra curricular subject.  ICT is used extensively throughout lessons and the department is very well resourced, using the latest computer technology to add variety to the curriculum and to develop independent learning.

At key stage 4, pupils are entered for both English Language and Literature at GCSE level. The GCSE board is AQA, specification A. The department provides children with many opportunities to maximize potential. After-school catch-up sessions are available to all pupils from Monday to Thursday, with members of the English team at hand to offer guidance and support.

As well as preparing pupils thoroughly for examinations, we also offer a number of opportunities to extend students' knowledge of the subject through a range of extra curricular activities run by members of the department, including book clubs, public speaking competitions and a chance to work on the school magazine. We also organise theatre visits to enhance enjoyment and understanding of set texts.
