Art Department

Aims

Coedcae School Art Department is a vibrant, progressive and creative area of the school. Our aim is to provide a sense of security and an atmosphere of respect out of which pupil’s creativity can flourish.

Pupils are encouraged to create imaginative and individual pieces of art through diverse and exciting schemes of work. The department is staffed with a variety of subject specialists who contribute to the delivery of a broad and balanced curriculum.

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3 pupils are introduced to a wide range of skills and techniques. These are developed with references to different cultures and to historical and contemporary artists including those from Wales.

Key Stage 4

GCSE Art and Design is offered to pupils of all abilities who are encouraged to explore their skills and strengths on an individual basis. Pupils have experience of clay, textiles, 3D, printing, drawing and painting. Art is a popular GCSE subject and the pass rate is one of the highest in the school, for 2011 it was 66% A* - C.

Opportunities

Our Art experience goes beyond the classroom. Many pupils regularly attend the after school and lunchtime provision offered by the department.

Year 10 pupils visit a major London Art Gallery as part of the GCSE course such as The Tate Modern, The Saatchi Gallery and the Royal Academy of Art.

Year 8 pupils are introduced to a project on Welsh Culture with a visit to St. Fagan’s, the Welsh Folk Museum in Cardiff.

The department has achieved success on a national level through the Urdd Art Competition where several of our pupils have had their Art Work displayed at the Urdd Eisteddfod.

KS3 Pupils had the opportunity to design the cover of the 1011 – 2012 Pupil Planner and to design the official Coedcae School Christmas Card.
